I had abstained from commenting on the dilemma in the Gulf up to this point because, frankly, I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what I could say that would be relevant. But now, after all that has transpired, I feel that saying anything about it is relevant.
It is truly baffling that after over a month of environmental devastation, the problem has yet to be corrected and, given the attitude toward the situation by the CEO, there is a completely lack of urgency on the part of BP. Here’s where we are so far:
Sad images like this:

Audacious remarks from BP’s CEO:
“the Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.”

An astounding 760 safety fines
All the while making $14 billion in profit in 2009

I urge everyone to abstain from stopping at BP filling stations at the very least but also, talk about it. Spread the word. Express your disdain. One person cannot influence change but millions of small, adamant (and educated) voices can most certainly make a difference.
UPDATE 06/04/2010 – I had to post this photo gallery. These images do a good job of conveying the vastness, the almost absurd amount of destruction being experienced at this very moment.
